Hello there! I am Giovanni, and I am a PhD student at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics in Garching bei München, Germany, working with Rüdiger Pakmor, Stephen Justham and Selma de Mink.
My research interests lie in stellar astrophysics, with a particular focus on massive stars, binary systems and stellar magnetic fields.
My current research focuses on the merger of two ultra-massive white dwarfs, which I am studying using the 3D magneto-hydrodynamics code AREPO, with particular interest in investigating the structure and magnetic evolution of the merger remnant.
In my Master's thesis, I explored the origin of internal magnetic fields in massive stars stripped of their outer envelope by their binary companion using the 1D stellar evolution code MESA.
Outside Astrophysics, I really like ancient literature and mythology, especially ancient greek and latin ones and I also love reading.
I play the guitar as a self-taught and I really enjoy music: my favorite genres are rock, pop-rock, rap and blues and my favorite artists are John Mayer, JP Saxe, Eminem and Guns N' Roses.
I also love travelling (on the right a carousel with some of the most stunning places I've been to), discovering new places and going back to the ones I loved.
When I'm not working, there is a good chance you'll find me in the mountains. Since I was little, I've always loved the quiet of snowy landscapes and the peace of green, grassy fields. In winter, I love skiing and the adrenaline of carving some curves on the slopes, while in summer I trade skis for boots to go hiking. As a t-shirt I was gifted says "I drop everything and move to Cortina" (which neatly sums up my retirement plans).
Last but not least, I really enjoy Formula 1 and I am a huge Ferrari fan, just in case the photo on the right (in which I am trying their simulator in Maranello) didn't give me away.
